The Cuyo (Cuyana) Basin underlies Mendoza Province in western Argentina (not shown on the map above). It trends northwest-southeast in an elongate strip adjacent to the Sierra Pintada System of the Andes. The Pampean pericraton is on the east. It has 2 sub-basins: Cacheuta in the north and Alvear in the south. The northern edge of the Cacheuta sub-basin underlies San Juan Province.
The basin originated as a Triassic rift prior to the break-up of Gondwana and continued to deepen during the Andean uplift.
