The Maldives are coral atolls growing on the Chagos-Maldives-Laccadive Ridge, a submarine mountain range 960 kms long that rises abruptly from the Indian Ocean.

The ridge is volcanic extending between the northern and central Indian Ocean. It was formed by the rapid migration of the Indian Ocean plate northwards over the so-called Reunion hotspot that now lies beneath the island of Reunion.

Consequently Globalshift regards the Maldive islands as having no oil and gas potential onshore and offshore.
