The Apennines were created in the Apennine orogeny beginning in the early Neogene and continuing today. Geographically they appear to be continuous with the Alpine system but geologically they are younger, developed southeast of the Adriatic foredeep (recognised in the Po Valley and offshore) which separates the Alps from the Apennines.
Globalshift considers that the lack of un-deformed sedimentary cover in the small land-locked enclave of San Marino ensures that it has no oil and gas potential.
