Offshore - areas cover more than 1,200 kms of coastline on the Mediterranean Sea but only 3 dry exploration wells have been drilled, all of them in the 1970s with one in deep waters. In 2012 CGG-Veritas carried out a seismic survey and the coastal strip offshore of the Bejaïa-Annaba perimeter (blocks 144-A and 145) and waters adjacent to the Willaya of Jijel have been opened for exploration. In March 2017 Eni and ExxonMobil signed a contract with Sonatrach to study the area.
Other areas - include the northern foldbelt where Sonatrach has begun exploring again. It is an area with fewer than 100 wells drilled since 1950. Sonatrach drilled a new exploration well in the Sirghine, Tiaret area west of Algiers in 2017.
